Jill Clayburgh was an American actress who had a successful career in film, television, and theater. She was born on April 30, 1944 in New York City, New York, USA. She was the daughter of Alfred Clayburgh, a successful investment banker, and his wife, Frances, a former fashion model.
Clayburgh began her career in the theater, appearing in off-Broadway productions in the late 1960s. She made her Broadway debut in 1971 in the play "The Rothschilds". She went on to appear in several other Broadway productions, including "The Misanthrope" (1974) and "The Real Thing" (1984).
Clayburgh made her film debut in the 1975 drama "The Landlord". She went on to appear in a number of films, including "An Unmarried Woman" (1978), "Starting Over" (1979), "Gable and Lombard" (1976), and "Bridesmaids" (2011). She also appeared in several television movies and series, including "The Golden Girls" (1985-1992) and "Law & Order" (1990-2010).
Clayburgh won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama for her performance in "An Unmarried Woman" (1978). She was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for the same role.
Clayburgh was married to playwright David Rabe from 1979 until her death in 2010. She had two children with Rabe, Michael and Jason.
Clayburgh died on November 5, 2010, at the age of 66, after a long battle with chronic lymphocytic leukemia. She was survived by her husband and two children.
