Jaume Balagueró is a Spanish filmmaker, writer, and producer. He is best known for his work in the horror genre, having directed films such as [REC] (2007), [REC] 2 (2009), and [REC] 3: Genesis (2012). He has also directed the psychological thriller Sleep Tight (2011) and the supernatural thriller Mientras Duermes (2011). Balagueró was born in Lleida, Catalonia, Spain, on 2 November 1968. He studied film at the Escola Superior de Cinema i Audiovisuals de Catalunya (ESCAC). He began his career as a director in the early 1990s, directing several short films. His first feature film was the horror film Darkness (2002). Balagueró has since become one of the most successful horror directors in Spain. He is best known for his work on the [REC] franchise, which he co-directed with Paco Plaza. The first film in the franchise, [REC] (2007), was a critical and commercial success, and spawned two sequels, [REC] 2 (2009) and [REC] 3: Genesis (2012).
