He moved to Hollywood in the late 1970s and worked as a cinematographer on films such as The Hunt for Red October, Die Hard, and Basic Instinct. De Bont has been nominated for two Academy Awards for Best Cinematography for his work on The Hunt for Red October and Basic Instinct.
