James Sassoon, Baron Sassoon, is a British banker and politician who served as the Commercial Secretary to the Treasury from 2010 to 2013. He was born on 11 September 1955 in London, United Kingdom. He is the son of Sir Philip Sassoon, 3rd Baronet, and his wife, Lady Sybil Sassoon. He was educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he graduated with a degree in economics. He then went on to study at Harvard Business School, where he earned an MBA. He began his career in banking, working for Credit Suisse First Boston and then for Goldman Sachs. He was appointed a director of the Bank of England in 2003 and was made a life peer in 2004. In 2010, he was appointed Commercial Secretary to the Treasury, a position he held until 2013. He was also a member of the House of Lords Economic Affairs Committee from 2011 to 2013. He is currently a senior advisor to the private equity firm CVC Capital Partners and a director of the Bank of England. He is also a member of the Advisory Board of the Centre for European Reform. He is also a director of Hongkong Land, Dairy Farm International Holdings and Mandarin Oriental and Chairman of the China-Britain Business Council.

In 2002, he joined HM Treasury, becoming managing director of Finance, Regulation and Industry, and served until 2006. Sassoon then became the Chancellor's Representative for Promotion of the City. In 2007, he was named President of the Financial Action Task Force on Money Laundering, also responsible for combating terrorism financing. He continued in both roles until 2008. Sassoon received a knighthood in the 2008 New Year Honours. At that time, he began advising David Cameron, then the Leader of the Opposition, and George Osborne, then the Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer, and became a member of the Shadow Cabinet's Economic Recovery Committee.
