Imre Kertész is a Hungarian writer and Holocaust survivor. He was born in Budapest, Hungary, on 9 November 1929. He is best known for his novel Fatelessness, which won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2002. Kertész was born into a Jewish family and was sent to Auschwitz and Buchenwald concentration camps during World War II. After the war, he returned to Hungary and worked as a journalist and translator. In 1975, he published his first novel, Fatelessness, which was based on his experiences in the concentration camps. The novel was a critical success and won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2002. Kertész has written several other novels, including Kaddish for an Unborn Child, Liquidation, and The Union Jack. He has also written several plays and essays. Kertész is considered one of the most important Hungarian writers of the 20th century. He has received numerous awards, including the Kossuth Prize, the Herder Prize, and the Order of Merit of the Republic of Hungary. He currently lives in Budapest.
