Hughie Thomasson was an American musician and songwriter best known as the lead guitarist and co-founder of the Southern rock band Outlaws. He was born on August 13, 1952 in Buchanan, Virginia, United States. Thomasson began playing guitar at the age of 12 and was influenced by the music of Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and Hank Williams. He formed the Outlaws in 1972 with fellow guitarist and songwriter Frank O'Keefe, bassist Monte Yoho, and drummer David Dix. The band released their self-titled debut album in 1975 and went on to become one of the most successful Southern rock bands of the 1970s and 1980s. Thomasson left the Outlaws in 1992 to pursue a solo career, releasing two albums, High Noon and The Last Rebel. He rejoined the Outlaws in 2002 and continued to tour and record with the band until his death in 2007. At the time of his death, Thomasson had an estimated net worth of $2 million.

Thomasson wrote many of the songs for the Outlaws, including most of their more popular songs like "Hurry Sundown", "There Goes Another Love Song," and "Green Grass and High Tides". After Outlaws disbanded, Thomasson joined Lynyrd Skynyrd, leaving that band in 2005 to reform Outlaws. Before his death, he contributed to writing of many of Lynyrd Skynyrd's songs on their 2009 album God & Guns, including the single "Still Unbroken."
