McKay reported from inside Syria in April 2018 during the missile attack by the United States on alleged chemical weapons facilities of the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. In 2017, she was noted for the dangerous nature of her work as a war correspondent in a post by Daily Kos on World Press Freedom Day.
