Henry Cisneros is a 74-year-old American politician who served as the 10th United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development from 1993 to 1997. He was the first Hispanic to serve in a presidential cabinet. Cisneros was born in San Antonio, Texas, to a Mexican-American family. He attended Texas A&M University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in economics in 1968. He then earned a master's degree in urban and regional planning from the University of Texas at Austin in 1970. Cisneros began his career in public service in 1971, when he was appointed to the San Antonio City Council. He was elected mayor of San Antonio in 1981, becoming the first Hispanic mayor of a major U.S. city. He served four terms as mayor, from 1981 to 1989. In 1993, President Bill Clinton appointed Cisneros as the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. He served in this role until 1997. During his tenure, he focused on revitalizing urban neighborhoods and increasing homeownership. Since leaving public office, Cisneros has served as the chairman of CityView, a real estate investment firm, and as the chairman of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials. He is also a senior advisor to the private equity firm, Oaktree Capital Management. Cisneros has an estimated net worth of $20 million.
