Harold Arlen was an American composer of popular music who composed over 500 songs, a number of which have become standards. He wrote the music for the classic film The Wizard of Oz, including the song "Over the Rainbow," which was voted the twentieth century's No. 1 song by the Recording Industry Association of America and the National Endowment for the Arts. He also wrote the music for the Broadway musicals Bloomer Girl and Jamaica. Arlen was born in Buffalo, New York, to a Jewish family. He began playing the piano at the age of five and was soon composing his own music. He studied music at the University of Michigan and then moved to New York City, where he worked as a pianist and arranger for various bands and orchestras. In the 1930s, Arlen began writing songs for Broadway musicals and films. He wrote the music for the classic film The Wizard of Oz, including the song "Over the Rainbow," which was voted the twentieth century's No. 1 song by the Recording Industry Association of America and the National Endowment for the Arts. He also wrote the music for the Broadway musicals Bloomer Girl and Jamaica. Arlen was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1971 and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1987. He died in 1986 at the age of 81.
