Hans Christian Andersen was a Danish author and poet best known for his fairy tales. He was born on April 2, 1805 in Odense, Denmark. He was the son of a shoemaker and a washerwoman. He was an avid reader and storyteller from a young age, and his first published work was a poem in 1819. He wrote over 150 fairy tales, including classics such as "The Little Mermaid," "The Ugly Duckling," and "The Emperor's New Clothes." His works have been translated into more than 125 languages and have inspired numerous adaptations in film, television, and theater. Hans Christian Andersen died on August 4, 1875 in Copenhagen, Denmark. He was 70 years old. He was buried in the Assistens Cemetery in Copenhagen.
