Gro Harlem Brundtland is a Norwegian politician and physician who served as Prime Minister of Norway from 1981 to 1996 and from 1990 to 1996. She was the first woman to hold the office. She was also the leader of the Norwegian Labour Party from 1981 to 1992. Brundtland was born in Oslo, Norway, on 20 April 1939. She studied medicine at the University of Oslo, graduating in 1963. She then worked as a doctor in Oslo until 1969, when she became a research fellow at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health. Brundtland entered politics in 1974, when she was elected to the Norwegian Parliament. She was appointed Minister of the Environment in 1974, and in 1981 she became the first woman to be elected Prime Minister of Norway. She served as Prime Minister for three terms, from 1981 to 1996. Brundtland is also known for her work in international politics. She chaired the World Commission on Environment and Development, which produced the Brundtland Report in 1987. This report, also known as the "Brundtland Report," is widely credited with helping to launch the global sustainability movement. Brundtland has received numerous awards and honors for her work in politics and public health. In 1998, she was appointed Director-General of the World Health Organization, a position she held until 2003. She is currently a member of the United Nations Secretary-General's High-Level Panel on Global Sustainability. Brundtland is 82 years old and has an estimated net worth of $10 million.
