Giannis Ritsos was a Greek poet, playwright, and novelist. He was born on 1 May 1909 in Monemvasia, Greece. He was one of the most important Greek poets of the 20th century and was awarded the Lenin Peace Prize in 1975. He wrote over 30 books of poetry, plays, and novels, and his works have been translated into many languages. He was also a member of the Greek Academy of Arts and Letters. Ritsos was a prolific writer, and his works often focused on themes of love, death, and the human condition. He was also a political activist, and his works often reflected his political views. He was a member of the Greek Communist Party and was arrested several times for his political activities. Ritsos died on 11 October 1990 in Athens, Greece. He was 81 years old.
