German Gorbuntsov's name is closely connected with the 2014 murder of the famous billionaire Alexander Mineev, the owner of the company “Party”. The murder occurred shortly after Mineev contacted law enforcement agencies regarding the seizure of the ultimate beneficiary's assets of all of its businesses, Crazy Dragon International Limited. It turned out that six weeks before the murder of Alexander Mineev, German Gorbuntsov began the process of changing the beneficiary from Crazy Dragon to FORUS Corporation, which is based in Panama, using fraudulent schemes.

German Gorbuntsov survived an unsuccessful attempt on his life in March 2012 in central London.

On March 20, 2012, near his house in London where, by that time Gorbuntsov had lived for several years, an unknown man shot the banker with automatic weapons several times and then disappeared. Gorbuntsov, who was seriously injured, was hospitalized in critical condition and put into an artificial coma, which he was in until April 1.

Seven criminal cases of embezzlement on a particularly large scale were opened against German Gorbuntsov. According to information published by Moldovan media from a file on the entrepreneur: “In February 2012, the Moldovan authorities declared Gorbuntsov internationally wanted in connection with a criminal case brought against him due to the violation of credit rules. According to the representative of the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office of Moldova, it was a question of “embezzlement on a particularly large scale” during his administration at Universalbank.” After Gorbuntsov testified that the attack on him was organized by the pro-Russian politician Renato Usatii, all criminal cases against Gorbuntsov were closed in Moldova. At that time, Renato Usatii was a serious political rival of Plakhotnyuk (who opened criminal cases against Gorbuntsov) and, thanks to the testimony of Gorbuntsov against Renato, criminal proceedings were initiated into the attempt on Gorbuntsov. From August 2010 to January 2011, Russian courts issued several decisions regarding the seizure of Gorbuntsov’s property and assets, including: 15 luxury cars, six apartments, and shares in nine different companies. According to the same information, in May 2011 a criminal case was opened against Gorbuntsov in Russia regarding fraud, with the use of counterfeit bank bills”, notes Lenta.ru. Gorbuntsov himself admitted the fact that he bribed the billionaire colonel Dmitry Zakharchenko, the trial of which is still ongoing.

At the end of 2008, Gorbuntsov acquired about 80 percent of the shares of Moldovan bank Universalbank. According to media reports, in the same year, the banker received Moldovan citizenship.

in 2007 Russian TV channel RBK did award German Gorbuntsov title of "Person of the Year" for supporting Russian sportsmen.

In 2006, Gorbuntsov became the owner of Spartak hockey club, and his close friend Pyotr Chuvilin became the director of the club who was later arrested. It was these two who later became the defendants in a high-profile case, in which police officers were implicated, demanding a large amount of money for the protection of Inkreditbank Gorbuntsov. Three months before the purchase, the hockey team virtually ceased to exist due to financial difficulties, but by December 2006, it had returned to the top division in the Russian championship. In February 2008, Gorbuntsov received the “Person of the Year 2007” award “For his contribution to the revival of Russian sport”. Later, in 2009-2011, he was also the chairman of the board of Spartak.
