George Stoll was an American composer and music director who worked in the film industry from the 1920s to the 1950s. He composed the scores for over 100 films, including The Wizard of Oz (1939), The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1938), and The Great Dictator (1940). He also wrote the music for the popular song "The Merry-Go-Round Broke Down" which was used as the theme song for the Looney Tunes cartoons. Stoll was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and studied music at the University of Minnesota. He began his career as a pianist and arranger for the Paul Whiteman Orchestra in the 1920s. He then moved to Hollywood and began working as a composer and music director for various studios. Stoll was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Music Score for The Wizard of Oz in 1939. He was also nominated for an Emmy Award for his work on the television series The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet in 1954. Stoll died in Los Angeles, California, in 1980.
