Gary Young is an American poet, printer, and book artist. He was born in 1951 in California and grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. He attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he studied English and creative writing. Young has published numerous books of poetry, including The Dream of a Moral Life (1989), The Heart's Essential Landscape (1995), and The Dream of the Unified Field (2004). He has also published several books of translations, including The Selected Poems of Tu Fu (1995) and The Selected Poems of Li Po (1998). Young is the founder and director of the Black Sparrow Press, a small press that specializes in publishing books of poetry and translations. He has also taught at several universities, including the University of California, Santa Cruz, and the University of California, Davis. Young has received numerous awards and honors for his work, including the American Book Award, the National Poetry Series Award, and the PEN/Oakland Josephine Miles Award.
