G.W. Bitzer was an American cinematographer and director who is best known for his work on the films of D.W. Griffith. He was born on April 21, 1872 in Roxbury, Massachusetts. He began his career as a projectionist in a local theater and eventually worked his way up to become a cinematographer. Bitzer worked with Griffith on some of his most famous films, including The Birth of a Nation (1915), Intolerance (1916), and Way Down East (1920). He was also the cinematographer for the first feature-length film, The Great Train Robbery (1903). Bitzer was known for his innovative use of lighting and camera techniques, which helped to create the look of early cinema. He was also a pioneer in the use of color film. Bitzer won two Academy Awards for his cinematography, for The Big Parade (1925) and The Crowd (1928). He was also nominated for an Oscar for his work on The Wind (1928). Bitzer died on April 29, 1944 in Los Angeles, California. He was 72 years old.

1975

According to Bitzer in an article published posthumously in "Films in Review" in October 1975, his salary in the 20's with Griffith was the same it had been when they were at Biograph, $250 per week with an additional $100 for managing the lab.

1924

Bitzer fell out with Griffith in 1924. Work became harder to come by and he worked on just a handful of films afterwards, retiring in 1933. He had done well financially by investing his lifetime savings ($7000) in the hugely successful The Birth of a Nation (1915), but ended up losing it all. His last job was restoring old movies at the Museum of Modern Art for $20 a week and he died in relative obscurity.

1906

He was a cinematographer and director, known for Logging in Maine (1906), Intolerance (1916) and Broken Blossoms or The Yellow Man and the Girl (1919). He was married to Ethel Boddy.

1896

Photographed William McKinley upon his nomination for the presidency. These images were later exhibited at Hammerstein's Olympia Theatre in October 1896.
