Freddie Young was a British cinematographer who worked on some of the most iconic films of the 20th century. He was born in London in 1902 and began his career as a camera assistant in the 1920s. He worked on a number of films in the 1930s and 1940s, including Alfred Hitchcock's The 39 Steps (1935) and The Lady Vanishes (1938). He was also the cinematographer on David Lean's Great Expectations (1946) and Lawrence of Arabia (1962). Young was known for his innovative use of the Technicolor process and his ability to capture the beauty of the desert landscapes in Lawrence of Arabia. He was nominated for three Academy Awards for Best Cinematography, for Lawrence of Arabia, Doctor Zhivago (1965), and Ryan's Daughter (1970). He won the BAFTA Award for Best Cinematography for Lawrence of Arabia and Ryan's Daughter. Young retired in the 1970s and died in 1998 at the age of 95. He was posthumously awarded the American Society of Cinematographers Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999.
