Ernest Bevin was a British statesman and trade union leader who served as Foreign Secretary in the post-war Labour government from 1945 to 1951. He was a key figure in the establishment of the United Nations and in the development of the post-war international order. Born in Winsford, Somerset, Bevin was the son of a farm labourer and was educated at a local elementary school. He left school at the age of 11 and worked as a farm labourer, a lorry driver and a docker. He joined the Transport and General Workers' Union in 1910 and became a full-time union official in 1912. Bevin was elected to the House of Commons in 1922 as a Labour MP and served as Minister of Labour in the 1924 Labour government. He was a key figure in the General Strike of 1926 and was instrumental in the formation of the TUC in 1927. He was appointed Foreign Secretary in the post-war Labour government in 1945 and was a key figure in the establishment of the United Nations. He also played a major role in the development of the post-war international order. Bevin died in 1951 at the age of 70. He was widely respected for his political acumen and his commitment to international peace and security. He was posthumously awarded the Order of Merit in 1952.
