Eleanor Powell was an American dancer and actress. She was best known for her tap dancing skills and was nicknamed the "Queen of Tap Dancing". She began her career as a chorus girl in Broadway musicals and went on to appear in a number of Hollywood films. She was also a successful recording artist, releasing several albums. Powell was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, on November 21, 1912. She began taking dance lessons at the age of four and made her Broadway debut in the musical Follow Thru in 1929. She went on to appear in a number of Broadway musicals, including George White's Scandals of 1931 and George White's Music Hall Varieties of 1932. In 1935, Powell made her film debut in the musical film Broadway Melody of 1936. She went on to appear in a number of other musical films, including Born to Dance (1936), Rosalie (1937), Honolulu (1939), and Ship Ahoy (1942). She also appeared in the non-musical films Lady Be Good (1941) and I Dood It (1943). Powell retired from film in 1945 and returned to Broadway, appearing in the musicals High Button Shoes (1947) and Small Wonder (1953). Powell was also a successful recording artist, releasing several albums. She was inducted into the National Museum of Dance's Mr. & Mrs. Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney Hall of Fame in 1988. Powell died on February 11, 1982, in Los Angeles, California.

In 1954, following a period of retirement, she was asked to host The Faith of Our Children (1953), a non-denominational religious program which featured appearances from film and sports stars. The show lasted three seasons and Eleanor received a regional Emmy Award for children's programming.

In 1935 she came to Hollywood where she starred in the great MGM musicals in the late 1930s, establishing herself as a Queen of Ra-Ta-Taps. In spite of the fact that she was primarily a solo performer she also danced with Fred Astaire and George Murphy.
