Edgar Bergen was an American actor, comedian, and radio performer. He was best known for his ventriloquism act, in which he performed with his dummy Charlie McCarthy. Bergen was born in Chicago, Illinois, and began performing in vaudeville at the age of 15. He went on to become a popular radio performer, appearing on The Chase and Sanborn Hour from 1937 to 1956. He also appeared in several films, including the Charlie McCarthy films of the 1940s. Bergen won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the 1945 film The Bells of St. Mary's. He was also nominated for an Emmy Award for his work on the television series The Muppet Show. Bergen died in 1978 at the age of 75.
