Earle Hagen is an American composer and arranger best known for his work on The Andy Griffith Show, I Spy, and The Dick Van Dyke Show. He was born on July 9, 1919 in Chicago, Illinois. Hagen began his career as a jazz musician, playing trombone in the bands of Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, and Artie Shaw. He then moved into arranging and composing for television and film. He wrote the theme songs for The Andy Griffith Show, I Spy, and The Dick Van Dyke Show, as well as the theme for the film The Courtship of Eddie's Father. Hagen was nominated for an Emmy Award for his work on The Andy Griffith Show and won an Emmy for his work on I Spy. He was also nominated for an Academy Award for his work on the film The Courtship of Eddie's Father. Hagen has been married twice and has two children. Left home at the age of 16 to play trombone with the big bands of Isham Jones, Ray Noble, Tommy Dorsey and Benny Goodman and His Orchestra. During his stint as musician/arranger with the Noble orchestra, he wrote the jazz standard "Harlem Nocturne" as a tribute to Duke Ellington and Johnny Hodges. This was later used as theme song for the TV crime show The New Mike Hammer (1984), starring Stacy Keach.

He is known for his work on I Spy (1965), Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953) and Tango and Cash (1989). He was married to Laura Roberts (Gunn) and Lou Sidwell.

After recovering from a near-fatal illness, he worked as a staff trombonist for CBS, until his enlistment in the Army Air Corps in 1942 (stationed in Santa Ana with the Radio Production Unit). During the 1940s and early 1950s he worked as arranger and conductor for 20th Century-Fox under the auspices of Alfred Newman. He left in 1953, encouraged by producer Sheldon Leonard to pursue a career as a writer for television.
