On 30 January 1998 he suffered injuries in a skiing accident at Steamboat Springs, Colorado and was paralyzed from the neck down. He died nine months later.


Since 1990, Southern Methodist University has bestowed the Doak Walker Award to "the nation's premier running back for his accomplishments on the field, achievement in the classroom, and citizenship in the community".
