Dawn Fraser is an Australian former competitive swimmer, and one of the most decorated athletes in Olympic history. She won eight Olympic medals, including four gold medals, and was the first woman to win individual gold medals in three consecutive Olympic Games. She also won a total of 24 Commonwealth Games medals, including 16 gold medals. Fraser was born in Balmain, New South Wales, Australia, on 4 September 1937. She was the youngest of four children born to Kenneth and Lillian Fraser. She began swimming at the age of seven, and was soon competing in local races. Fraser's career as a competitive swimmer began in 1954, when she won the Australian National Championships in the 100-meter freestyle. She went on to win the event at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, becoming the first Australian woman to win an individual Olympic gold medal. She also won gold medals in the 100-meter freestyle at the 1960 and 1964 Summer Olympics, becoming the first woman to win individual gold medals in three consecutive Olympic Games. In addition to her Olympic success, Fraser also won 24 Commonwealth Games medals, including 16 gold medals. She was the first woman to break the one-minute barrier in the 100-meter freestyle, and held the world record in the event for 15 years. Fraser retired from competitive swimming in 1966, and was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1967. She was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 1965, and was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 1985. She was also awarded the Australian Sports Medal in 2000.
