David Malcolm Orr is a civil engineer and a professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is a leading expert in the field of sustainable engineering and has been a major contributor to the development of green infrastructure. He is the author of several books, including Designing the Green Economy: The Postindustrial Alternative to Corporate Globalization and Ecological Design. Orr was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland in 1953. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Queen's University Belfast in 1975 and his Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Edinburgh in 1977. He then moved to the United States to pursue a PhD in Civil Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, which he completed in 1981. Orr has held a number of positions in academia, including professor of civil engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, professor of environmental studies at Oberlin College, and professor of environmental studies at the University of Oregon. He is currently the Paul Sears Distinguished Professor of Environmental Studies and Politics at Oberlin College. Orr has received numerous awards and honors for his work, including the MacArthur Fellowship in 1992, the Heinz Award in 2004, and the Right Livelihood Award in 2006.
