Dave Arneson was an American game designer and author best known for co-developing the first published role-playing game, Dungeons & Dragons (D&D), with Gary Gygax. He was born on October 1, 1947 in Hennepin County, Minnesota. Arneson was a student of history and a wargamer. He was a member of the International Federation of Wargamers and the International Wargaming Association. He was also a member of the Castle & Crusade Society, a group of wargamers who met in the Twin Cities area. In 1971, Arneson and Gygax co-developed the first published role-playing game, Dungeons & Dragons. Arneson was the primary designer of the game's original setting, the Blackmoor campaign. He also designed the first version of the game's combat system. In the 1980s, Arneson wrote and published several role-playing games, including Blackmoor, Empire of the Petal Throne, and Adventurer Conqueror King. He also wrote several books on game design and game theory. In the 2000s, Arneson was inducted into the Origins Hall of Fame and the Academy of Adventure Gaming Arts & Design Hall of Fame. He was also awarded the Game Manufacturers Association's Lifetime Achievement Award. At the time of his death in 2009, Arneson was working on a new role-playing game, Adventurer Conqueror King System.
