Schmid was born in Flims-Waldhaus, Graubünden, Switzerland. He studied at the University of Zurich and the University of Munich, where he received a degree in German literature. He began his career as an actor in the 1960s, appearing in several films and television series. In the 1970s, Schmid began directing films, including the critically acclaimed The Tin Drum (1979).
