[7 December 2020] Awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Donald Trump at a ceremony in the Oval Office.

Inducted into the International Sports Hall of Fame in 2014.

Inducted into the United World Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2012 in the Legends category.

Inducted into the Iowa State University Athletics Hall of Fame in 1997 (inaugural class).

Inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1980.

Coached Iowa to 15 NCAA National Wrestling (nine in a row from 1978-1986) Championships and 21 Big 10 Wrestling titles.

Head Wrestling Coach at the University of Iowa (1977-1997).

Won Olympic Lightweight Gold Medal at the 1972 Summer Olympics. In six matches, he did not surrender a point.

Perhaps the greatest amateur wrestler in history, Dan Gable is synonomous with wrestling. The Waterloo, Iowa, native began wrestling as boy and won three Iowa High School championships and two NCAA championships at Iowa State University. He lost his final college match in 1970, however two years later he won the gold medal in his weight class at the Munich Olympics. What was all the more remarkable about his win was that he did not give up a point in his matches.
