He was born on May 10, 1978 in Toyonaka, Osaka, Japan. Yamai began his professional career in 2001 with the Orix BlueWave. He was traded to the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks in 2006 and has been with the team ever since. He has been a consistent starter for the Hawks, and has been a part of the team's championship runs in 2011, 2014, and 2015. Yamai has been selected to the NPB All-Star Game four times, in 2006, 2008, 2011, and 2014. He was also named the Pacific League MVP in 2011. Yamai is married and has two children.
