Claude Akins was an American actor who had a long and successful career in film, television, and stage. He was best known for his roles in the television series The Misadventures of Sheriff Lobo and the film The Defiant Ones. Akins was born in Nelson, Georgia, on May 25, 1926. He served in the United States Army during World War II and then attended the University of Georgia. After college, he moved to New York City to pursue an acting career. Akins appeared in numerous films, including The Defiant Ones, Rio Bravo, The Dirty Dozen, and The Undefeated. He also had a successful career in television, appearing in shows such as The Misadventures of Sheriff Lobo, The A-Team, and The Rockford Files. Akins was married twice and had two children. A lifelong golfer, he played in a lot of pro-am golf tournaments for various charities right up until his death, including the Vantage Championship Pro-Am at Tanglewood Park in Clemmons, North Carolina, in the early 1990s. The son of a police officer, Akins never seemed short of work and appeared in nearly 100 films and 180+ TV episodes in a career spanning over 40 years. He originally attended Northwestern University, and went on to serve with the US Army Signal Corps in World War II in Burma and the Phillipines. Upon returning, he reignited his interest in art and drama and first appeared in front of the camera in 1953 in From Here to Eternity (1953).
