He was the son of a Wolof family and was raised in a traditional Islamic environment. He attended a Quranic school and later studied at the Ecole William Ponty in Dakar. He went on to study at the Sorbonne in Paris, where he earned a doctorate in 1933. Cheikh Anta Diop was a prolific writer and researcher, publishing numerous books and articles on African history and culture. He was a strong advocate for African unity and self-determination, and his work was influential in the development of Pan-Africanism. He was also a vocal critic of colonialism and racism. Cheikh Anta Diop died in 1986 in Dakar, Senegal. He is remembered as one of the most important and influential scholars of African history and culture.
