After her role in Doble Kara, in July 2017 Villaroel briefly returned to her home network GMA Network to have a stint in travel-reality show of GMA Road Trip with her children and husband Zoren Legaspi.

She returned to ABS-CBN in January 2012 to star in Lorenzo's Time. Villaroel also hosted the weekend entertainment news programme Showbiz Inside Report alongside Janice de Belen, Joey Marquez and Ogie Diaz followed by Buzz ng Bayan alongside Janice and Boy Abunda. She had recently starred in two primetime teleseryes; the romantic-drama Got to Believe and the soap opera Bridges of Love. Currently, she also starred in the afternoon melodrama series Doble Kara, portraying the role of Lucille Dela Rosa, an overprotective and evil scheming foster mother of Kara who's doesn't know all of her family's secrets. Carmina's character will make the lead heroines lives miserable as hell with the help of Alex.

Villarroel married her partner Zoren Legaspi on November 15, 2012; the couple had their twins Maverick Peter and María Cassandra on January 6, 2001 in the United States. Legaspi planned a surprise proposal and civil wedding with the help of their families and the network. The ceremony was later air the following Saturday as the television special Zoren-Carmina: Always Forever, A Wedding Like No Other. The idea of a surprise proposal followed by a flashmob-style instant wedding was inspired by a remarkably similar episode of the US television programme Mobbed, hosted by Howie Mandel.

She starred in the afternoon teleserye Recuerdo de Amor from 2001 to 2002 as a comeback while she hosted on ABS-CBN's Morning Girls from 2002 to 2003. Villaroel switched to rival network GMA, hosting the now-defunct morning talk show Sis in 2003 together with real-life sisters Janice de Belen and Gelli de Belen until it unofficially ended in 2010, then later she is also the co-host of Love ni Mister, Love ni Misis in 2010 until ended in 2011 with her husband Zoren Legaspi. Villaroel is a former contract artist of GMA Network under GMA Artist Center.

Villarroel was previously married to Rustom Padilla (later BB Gandanghari) in 1994 the two had no children, but filed for annulment several months after, which was granted in 2002.

Villaroel foray in the world of Philippine showbiz started when she was spotted in the Jollibee TVC in 1986. After a year, she was seen via the Regal produced film, "Pinulot ka lang sa Lupa" as the young Angeli (portrayed by Maricel Soriano as an adult) and in the sitcom, "Palibhasa Lalake" as Richard Gomez kid sister, Cathy or Catherine.

Villaroel was with Regal Entertainment in the early 1980s, and had several movies with the film production company. In the mid-1990s, she moved to VIVA Films.
