Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson was a Norwegian writer, poet, and playwright who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1903. He is best known for his plays, poetry, and novels, which often dealt with social and political issues. He was also a prominent figure in the Norwegian independence movement. Bjørnson was born in Kvikne, Norway, on 8 December 1832. He was the son of a pastor and grew up in a rural environment. He studied at the University of Christiania (now Oslo) and was a student of the famous Norwegian poet Henrik Wergeland. Bjørnson began writing poetry and plays in the 1850s. His first play, "The Feast at Solhaug," was published in 1857 and was a great success. He went on to write many more plays, including "The Bankrupt," "The King," and "The Last of the Vikings." He also wrote several novels, including "Arne," "Synnöve Solbakken," and "The Fisher Maiden." Bjørnson was a prominent figure in the Norwegian independence movement and was a leader of the Liberal Party. He was also a strong advocate for the rights of women and children. Bjørnson was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1903 for his "vivid epic power which has renewed the great traditions of the North." He died in 1910 in Paris, France.
