Amy Gerstler is an American poet, essayist, and short story writer. She was born in San Diego, California, in 1956. She earned a B.A. in English from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from Vermont College. Gerstler has published several collections of poetry, including Bitter Angel (1990), which won the National Book Critics Circle Award, and Medicine (1999). Her essays and short stories have appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, and other publications. Gerstler has received numerous awards and honors, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, and a Lannan Literary Award.
