Amiri Baraka is an American poet, playwright, essayist, and political activist. He is best known for his 1964 play Dutchman, which won an Obie Award. He was a major figure in the Black Arts Movement of the 1960s and 1970s. Baraka was born Everett Leroy Jones in 1934 in Newark, New Jersey. He attended Rutgers University and Howard University, but did not graduate from either. He was a member of the US Air Force from 1954 to 1957. Baraka began writing poetry in the 1950s and published his first book of poetry, Preface to a Twenty Volume Suicide Note, in 1961. He was a co-founder of the Black Arts Repertory Theatre/School in Harlem in 1965. He wrote several plays, including Dutchman, The Slave, and The Toilet. Baraka was a major figure in the Black Arts Movement of the 1960s and 1970s. He was a leader of the Black Power movement and a vocal advocate of Pan-Africanism. He was also a prominent member of the Communist Party USA. Baraka was married three times and had seven children. He died in 2014 at the age of 79.
