Alwin Nikolais was an American choreographer, composer, and director who is considered one of the most influential figures in modern dance. He was born on November 25, 1910 in Southington, Connecticut. He studied music at the University of Michigan and later at the Juilliard School of Music. Nikolais began his career as a dancer and choreographer in the 1930s, and he was a pioneer in the development of multimedia performance. He was the first choreographer to use electronic music and film in his works. He also developed a unique form of choreography that combined elements of modern dance, ballet, and theater. Nikolais was the recipient of numerous awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, a MacArthur Fellowship, and a Dance Magazine Award. He was also inducted into the National Museum of Dance Hall of Fame in 1988. He died on May 8, 1993 in New York City.
