Allan Arbus was an American actor, photographer, and director. He was best known for his role as psychiatrist Dr. Sidney Freedman on the television series M*A*S*H. Arbus was born in New York City on February 15, 1918. He attended the Professional Children's School and the High School of Music and Art. He served in the United States Army during World War II. After the war, Arbus began working as a photographer for the fashion magazine, Glamour. He also worked as a freelance photographer for other magazines, including Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, and Look. In 1972, Arbus began his acting career with a role in the television series M*A*S*H. He played the role of psychiatrist Dr. Sidney Freedman for the show's entire 11-season run. He also appeared in several films, including The Seven-Ups (1973), The In-Laws (1979), and The Sting II (1983). In addition to his acting and photography work, Arbus also directed several television episodes, including episodes of M*A*S*H, The White Shadow, and The Paper Chase. Arbus was married to actress Mariclare Costello from 1959 until their divorce in 1969. He was married to photographer Diane Arbus from 1969 until her death in 1971. He was married to actress Mariclare Costello from 1972 until his death in 2013. Allan Arbus had an estimated net worth of $2 million at the time of his death.

In the 1950s, Arbus had an advertising photography business in New York, shooting both local and national ad campaigns, with his first wife, Diane Arbus (née Nemerov), sister of future poet laureate Howard Nemerov. Allan and Diane Arbus first met while working in Russek's Department Store. The couple had two children, photographer Amy Arbus and writer/art director Doon Arbus. Allan and Diane separated in 1959 and divorced a few years later. Diane Arbus committed suicide on July 26, 1971. She was the subject of the film Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus (2006).
