Alexander Alexeieff was a Russian-born French filmmaker, animator, and artist. He is best known for his pioneering work in the field of animation, particularly his invention of the pinscreen, a device which allowed him to create intricate and detailed animated images. Alexeieff was born in Kazan, Russia, in 1901. He studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg, and later moved to Paris in 1925. There, he worked as a set designer for the Ballets Russes, and later as a graphic artist for the French film industry. In 1931, Alexeieff invented the pinscreen, a device which allowed him to create intricate and detailed animated images. He used the pinscreen to create a number of short films, including the Academy Award-winning "Night on Bald Mountain" (1933). He also collaborated with his wife, Claire Parker, on a number of films, including "The Nose" (1930) and "The Tale of the Fox" (1937). Alexeieff's work was highly influential in the development of animation, and he was awarded the French Legion of Honor in 1965. He died in Paris in 1982.

1922

After the Revolution, in 1922, Alexeieff settled in Paris where he studied painting, did stage decor, and beginning in 1925 lent his hand to illustrating editions of classic literature. Under the influence of the avant garde Cinema movement of the time, he aspired to move into directing.

1920

Educated in Paris in the 1920's, where he studied painting, theatrical set design and book illustration. In addition to his work with animation in film, he has also been latterly active in advertising.

1906

Russian-born French experimental short artist Alexeieff, who with his wife American-born Claire Parker invented the pinscreen animation technique,is most known for designing the prologue sequence for Orson Welles's The Trial. He grew up in Constantinople, then the Ottoman Empire, where in 1906 his military attaché father was killed by the German secret service. Returning to Czarist Russia with his school principal mother, he entered the Cadets military academy of Saint Petersburg and his 16 years there would influence his later fondness for Russian themes in his art work and filmmaking.
