Alan Alda is an American actor, director, screenwriter, and author. He is best known for his role as Hawkeye Pierce in the television series M*A*S*H, for which he won five Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe Award. He has also appeared in films such as The Aviator, The Seduction of Joe Tynan, and Crimes and Misdemeanors. Alda was born on January 28, 1936, in New York City, the son of Robert Alda, an actor and singer, and Joan Browne, a homemaker and former beauty-pageant winner. He attended Archbishop Stepinac High School in White Plains, New York, and Fordham University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 1956. Alda began his acting career in the 1950s, appearing in television shows such as The Phil Silvers Show and Playhouse 90. He made his film debut in the 1961 film The Longest Day. He went on to appear in films such as The Aviator, The Seduction of Joe Tynan, and Crimes and Misdemeanors. In 1972, Alda was cast as Hawkeye Pierce in the television series M*A*S*H, which ran for 11 seasons and earned him five Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe Award. He also directed several episodes of the show. In addition to his acting career, Alda is also an author and a public speaker. He has written several books, including Never Have Your Dog Stuffed: And Other Things I’ve Learned and Things I Overheard While Talking to Myself. He has also spoken at TED Talks and other events.
