He is a former World Junior Champion, and has won numerous international tournaments. He is also a renowned chess coach, having trained several top players, including Viswanathan Anand, Peter Leko, and Judit Polgar. Mikhalchishin earned the Grandmaster title in 1979, and won the World Junior Championship in 1980. He has won several international tournaments, including the World Open in Philadelphia in 1985, the European Team Championship in 1989, and the World Open in New York in 1991. He has also won several national championships, including the Ukrainian Championship in 1981 and the Slovenian Championship in 2002.
