Adolfo Bioy Casares was an Argentine writer, journalist, and translator. He was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on September 15, 1914. He was the son of Adolfo Bioy Casares and his wife, María Esther de Luca. He was educated at the Colegio Nacional de Buenos Aires and the University of Buenos Aires. Bioy Casares was a prolific writer, publishing more than twenty books, including novels, short stories, and essays. He is best known for his novel The Invention of Morel (1940), which was adapted into the film Last Year at Marienbad (1961). He also wrote the novel The Dream of Heroes (1953), which was adapted into the film The Adventures of Robinson Crusoe (1954). Bioy Casares was a member of the Argentine literary group known as the "Generation of '37," which included Jorge Luis Borges, Silvina Ocampo, and others. He was also a close friend of Borges, and the two collaborated on several works, including the anthology Ficciones (1944). Bioy Casares was awarded the National Prize for Literature in 1971 and the Cervantes Prize in 1979. He died in Buenos Aires on March 8, 1999.
